The universal Patriarchy starts granting Church of Ukraine to autocephaly and cancels Filaret's anathema. The universal patriarchy in Constantinople agreed to provide autocephaly of Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The sacred synod of Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople also made the decision to cancel an anathema of the head of Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev patriarchy Filaret. Autocephaly of Ukrainian Orthodox Church and cancellation of an anathema of Filaret In Istanbul at a meeting of the Synod under the chairmanship of the Universal patriarch Varfolomey I "it was decided to confirm already made decision that the Universal patriarchy starts the procedure of granting the Ukrainian church to autocephaly", it is said in the official statement. The synod decided "to restore from this point a stauropegic monastery of Universal patriarchy in Kiev" and also "to accept and consider petitions for the appeal of Filaret Denisenko, Makari Maletich and their followers". It is at the same time decided to deprive of validity the Synod solution of 1686 on the right of the Moscow patriarch to appoint the Kiev metropolitan. The sacred synod also warned against capture and assignment of churches, monasteries and other objects. This statement was preceded by two-day discussion of "the Ukrainian question". Participants of the Synod heard the report of exarchs of the Universal patriarch in Kiev who were appointed in September for preparation of creation in Ukraine of local church. To restore the Stauropegic monastery of the Universal Patriarch in Kiev, one of its numerous Stauropegic monasteries in Ukraine which there always existed. 3. To accept and consider petitions for the appeal of Filaret Denisenko, Makari Maletich and their followers who appeared in split not for the dogmatic reasons according to initial prerogatives of the Constantinople Patriarch to receive petitions from hierarches and other clergy from all Autocephalous Churches. Thus, above-mentioned are canonically restored to their hierarchical or priestly rank, and their followers are restored in communication with Church. 4. To cancel the legal obligation of the Synod letter of 1686 issued on circumstances of that time which granted the right through an ikonomiya to the Moscow Patriarch to appoint the metropolitan of the Kiev, elected by Assembly Priests of his diocese which will mark out the Universal Patriarch as the First hierarch at any celebration, proclaiming and confirming the initial dependence on the Constantinople Parent Church. 5.
