Italy found remains of the oldest dinosaur

This is the first known dinosaur of the Jurassic Period found in the territory of modern Italy. Paleontologists found remains of a large predatory tetradactyl dinosaur in quite unusual place – in the Italian Alps. About it on Wednesday, December 19, Naked Science with reference to the PeerJ magazine reported. Scientists claim that recently identified pangolin who received the name Saltriovenator zanellai lived about 200 million years ago. This is the first known dinosaur of the Jurassic Period found in the territory of modern Italy. Also this opening allows to claim about unexpectedly early appearance of carnivorous pangolins. Earlier was considered that large dinosaurs appeared only in the middle of the Jurassic Period – about 180-170 million years ago, and till this time pangolins were rather small. By estimates of experts, the age of a dinosaur which remains were found by the amateur paleontologist Angelo Zanella contains only 24 years. At this Saltriovenator zanellai weighed 1.3 tons, there were seven meters in length and about three meters height. It allows to claim that the pangolin had the huge sizes not only by the standards of the time, but also all Jurassic Period. In addition, scientists consider it the certain "the lost link" uniting the most ancient dinosaurs – tseratozavr, dilofozavr and allozavr – with all other predators of the Mesozoic. They drew such conclusion proceeding from the fact that on appearance it reminded ancient pangolins, however had only three fingers on forepaws. Having studied remains, archeologists came to a conclusion that the body of a dinosaur appeared in the sea where it was fairly bitten by sea inhabitants. Then, when forming the Alps 30 million years ago, its remains rose to the surface. Many of 132 bones were fragmented, but it was enough to define that the dinosaur had four fingers, as well as at all known tseratozavr. At more ancient pangolins, such as герреразавр, there were about five fingers, but during evolution their "little finger" was lost, and after the same fate comprehended also "anonymous" – at the well-known allozavr and tyrannosaurs already up to three fingers on a paw. This opening answers an old question of that, how exactly birds and three-fingered dinosaurs lost two "excess" fingers. In particular, paws of Saltriovenator zanellai confirm that the longest finger of birds and predatory dinosaurs was an analog of an index, but not middle finger as was considered before. Earlier scientists found the first huge dinosaur in Argentina. The ten-meter animal weighing about ten tons received the name Ingentia prima – "the first giant".
